Service Projects

The students are encouraged to give witness to and integrate into their lives the message and mission of Jesus, especially through service. Eighth Grade students are expected to complete 2 service projects each quarter. Each service should indicate the corporal work of mercy completed. Christian service reflection cards should be completed by October 11. I ask that the service projects not repeat throughout the year. Please speak with me about special circumstances.

It is my hope that students will grow in their understanding of what it means to sacrifice for the sake of others when giving of their own time, talent, or treasure. Services should take a minimum of 30 minutes. If purchasing items, it is my hope that the students will use funds that they have been earned.

I ask that service completed for immediate family members not be turned in for school service projects. I am asking students to reach out to the greater community.

Following is a list of possible activities:

Make and deliver cards, decorations, or treats to brighten someone's day.

Homeless Shelters and Soup Kitchens
Donate food or supplies to your local homeless shelter or soup kitchen. Check the local yellow pages for homeless shelters and soup kitchens in your area.

Helping the Elderly
Volunteer to mow lawn or shovel snow for an elderly person in your community. Check with your local senior citizens center or place of worship for a list of people in need.

Visit a Nursing Home
Visit a local nursing home in your community. Many elderly in a home enjoy playing games, talking, or listening to a good book. Be sure to call the nursing home in advance to make arrangements for how your family can best help.

Help the Animals
Children love animals, so why not use this interest in animals to help out at your local Humane Society by donating your time or supplies (pet food, old blankets).

Support a Local United Way Charity
Use the United Way website to find a volunteer opportunity in your neighborhood. Simply type in your zip code!
